🌞🌿 Keep Your Lawn Green During Summer Heat & Dry Conditions in the Vancouver Area 🌱💧
It’s officially summer in Vancouver — and by early July, lawns across Burnaby, Surrey, Coquitlam, and the Lower Mainland are already feeling the effects of rising heat and limited rainfall. With dry conditions and water restrictions now in place, your lawn needs the right care to stay green, resilient, and healthy all season long. 🌱🔥
1️⃣ Mow High & Leave Clippings
✅ Keep your mower set to 2.5–3 inches to help shade the soil and retain moisture.
✅ Leave grass clippings on the lawn — they break down quickly and return nutrients to the soil.
Cutting too short during summer stress can weaken your turf and leave it vulnerable to sun scorch and pests.
2️⃣ Smart Watering During Heatwaves
With Stage 1 watering restrictions now in effect, remember:
💧 Water early in the morning (before 7 am) for maximum absorption
💧 1 inch per week is ideal — or 45–60 minutes daily during heatwaves
💧 Even-numbered addresses: Saturdays, odd-numbered: Sundays
💧 Use sprinklers, soaker hoses, or manual watering (drip irrigation is best!)
Water deeply and less often to encourage roots to grow deeper — this helps your lawn become more drought-resistant over time.
3️⃣ Avoid Heavy Feeding or Aeration in Extreme Heat
✅ If your lawn is looking stressed or it’s especially hot, hold off on heavy fertilizer or aerating. These processes can put additional stress on the grass.
✅ Instead, consider light liquid iron or seaweed-based treatments that green things up without pushing growth.
4️⃣ Aerate & Overseed When Conditions Are Right
✅ Core aeration and overseeding are best done when temperatures are mild — think early summer (before peak heat) or early fall.
✅ If conditions are still favourable, this helps relieve soil compaction, encourages better nutrient absorption, and thickens up patchy areas.
It’s also a good time to topdress with a light compost or turf blend if your lawn can handle it.
5️⃣ Protect Against Weeds, Insects & Fungus
✅ A healthy, dense lawn naturally resists crabgrass, chafer beetles, and fungal issues like brown patch.
Stay on top of things with:
🌱 Early weeding and manual removal
🌱 Spot-treatment for infestations (when needed)
🌱 Light raking and seeding to fill in weak spots
6️⃣ Stay Water-Wise During Droughts
July and August are the peak drought months in Metro Vancouver. Conserve water while still protecting your lawn by:
✅ Watering early and deeply
✅ Letting lawns go dormant temporarily if needed (they’ll bounce back!)
✅ Prioritizing turf in high-traffic or visible areas
✅ Considering drought-tolerant turf blends or native grasses for long-term fixes
